Brightlingsea sits where the Colne estuary opens to the sea. It is the only limb of the Cinque Ports outside Kent and Sussex, and it has lived by the water ever since: boatbuilding, oysters and now sailing, with dinghies on the hard and beach huts along the shore.
In town, Jacobes Hall and the old streets around the High Street sit beside Victorian terraces and newer homes on the edges.

Between seasons
